Paintings and Drawings

The paintings and drawings on this site are in a range of media including: oil, ink, watercolour on gesso, on board, on paper and on canvas.

I use only high quality materials such as acid-free 100% cotton papers, artist pigments and Lascaux varnishes which are designed to meet conservation quality standards. The offerings are intended to last - the t-shirts for many washes and the paintings for generations. I like the idea that I can bring joy to people in a sustainable way. I buy many materials from other independent sellers on Etsy. Many of my paintings have a romantic or wistful theme, a joyful mood, appreciation of nature.

Sometimes there is a questioning mood and the work has a socialist, environmental or protest theme. I will be adding artwork of a political nature to my shop. I support the movement of Boycotts, Divestments and Sanctions (BDS), and the many voices that are raised against the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people. I also support Julian Assange and the urgent and desperate need for freedom for press to publish truthful information that is in the public interest, such as that which exposes governmental crimes.  I reject the false rhetoric given to try to justify his imprisonment and suffering. He should never have been imprisoned for even one day.

Mending

This is the title of a painting that I am working on currently, shown below. The title relates to 'the slogan Mending is Better Than Ending' from 'A Brave New World' by Aldous Huxley to promote the idea, widespread in society that we shoould not mend, but rather throw away . The novel shows a dystopian future, while my painting evokes a utopian scene in which there is a large and much frequented 'Repair' shop as well as one to 'Exchange'.

As I work on the painting I feel happy, but there is an anxiety about bringing the painting to its final stage without darkening the mood.

I am documenting work on the painting by video a,nd will post this as well as the finished work.

More paintings will be added to the site over the next few months and made available in the shop on this site.

Additionally, I am working on another exciting project of some portable art items that are intended to last for inter-generational use and enjoymen. I will post more on this topic when I am ready to disclose.

Above:  Study for 'Mending;.

Other works in progress: 'Born Equal'. Below: 'Welcome'.

The image shows the large painting 'Mending' at its current stage.

Terrace

This finished painting | collage,'Terrace', shows people living close together evoking both their unity and also the spirit of what we are missing.

Portraits

When painting people my aim is to capture the feeling of the peson: their mood or attitude and what it is like being in their presence.

This painting was done in a single sitting and I had the intention to work on it further, but the colours and the 'song' of the painting seemed to be complete. I could not risk further work which might have destroyed the feeling of the colours and half focus.

As you can see, I am highly influenced by art from China and Japan and in particular by Chinese brushmarks. What interests me is the unity with nature as the energy flows from subject, through the paint and brush onto the paper and out to the viewer. The  philosophy sets out the aim of showing as much in as few brushmarks as possible.

Landscape of the Heart

This painting was done out on field not in the studio. The cholice of colours and the way that the ink sinks into the paper produce a conforting feeling.

As you can see the paper has buckled, in spite of being of high quality. However, this will be lattened by placing it fully dry underneath a board with some heavy objects on top.

All painting will have this treatment before being shipped to customers, however I am showing you them how they look freshly-made so that you can fully experience the connection to them as hand-made objects before they are 'made presentable'. It is important to frame all works on paper behind glass or plexiglass. This protects them from environmental pollution and moisture while on display and will preserve the colours, medium and the paper itself.

Other landscape works will be added. The dimensions and materials of all works will be stated on this site when they are made available for sale.
